Design District Helsinki brings together creative people in the heart of Helsinki, just a 15-minute walk from the railway station. The area takes in 25 different streets and 200 different places worth a second look, from interior design shops and fashion boutiques to jewellers, from antique shops to galleries and museums, and from restaurants to hotels and design agencies.

Networked design

Design District Helsinki established in 2005 – starting as a network of entrepreneurs including Design Forum Finland, the national organisation that has been promoting Finnish design for over a remarkable 130 years. Today Design District Helsinki is almost like a little city of its’ own characterised by local makers and doers who all contribute to the ever-changing scene of the area. Here you will find the famous Finnish fashion and design brands from Marimekko, Iittala and Artek to the newly emerging artists, architects, designers, tastemakers, craftsmen, studios and superwomen of tomorrow – who are often displayed at Design Forum Finland shop and gallery in the very heart of the Design District.

A close-knit community

Design District Helsinki makes a lively hub of twenty-five blocks stretching from Kamppi and Esplanade to the core of the area called Punavuori, which still for many is the only real Design District. Imagine meeting creatives from all fields of design forming a network of over two hundred members and a neighbourhood that blurs with originality, ideas and lots of energy. To locate the shops, stops and studios they are marked with round black-and-white Design District identity stickers. It is not only for navigating in the quarters but also for giving the shopkeepers a sense of belonging to a community and being part of a good cause.

Late-night shopping, markets and food walks

Design District Helsinki is also hosting a variety of events throughout the year – Design District Week, Design Markets, Late Night shopping evenings and a popular Christmas Market just about the same time as first snowflakes colour the streets in cosy white. Design District Helsinki visitor guides and maps for the area are available in any of the shops, studios, cafés, restaurants, galleries and museums in the area. Local guides have hosted design walks since 2005 and they still count as a popular walking tour for the design, art and architecture enthusiasts. Lately wine and food walks have been attracting a bunch of foodies to the area.

Meet the locals and stay for a while

Design District Helsinki is also about the multitalented people behind the counters and display windows telling and sharing about their favorites, insights and home-kind-of-feeling for the area. Their expertise covers architecture, art, design, film, food, fashion and genuine craftsmanship.
Get lost, pop in, say hello and stay for a while.
